The Role of Gender & Sexuality in Shakespeare's "Green World":

Focusing on As You Like It

Stothard, Thomas, "As You Like It, act V, sc.4", 18th/19th cent., Folger Digital Image Collection.

Set in France, this play contains a number of pastoral elements including the use of the Forest of Arden, a "green space" that removes the characters from the norms and strictures of society, as well as the use of disguises. Both of these elements contribute to a shift in gender and sexual norms that are easily demonstrated in the play's characters.
